In our IN we are working with informational texts. We've covered Topic, Topic Sentences, Main Idea, and Supporting Details. Today we will work on Transitional Sentences and review the items from yesterday. Tomorrow we will focus on Summarization.
Our Scrimmage on Friday will cover Characterization, Theme, Main Idea, Supporting Details, and Summarization.
Standards:
- RI.5.2 Determine two or more main ideas of a text and explain how they are supported by key details; summarize the text.
- RI.5.1 Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
- RL.5.2 Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text, including how characters in a story or drama respond to challenges or how the speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic; summarize the text.
- RL.5.3 Compare and contrast two or more characters, settings, or events in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., how characters interact).
We also are ready to jump into reading Hidden Figures, so continue to send those books in please.

Required IN assignment--finish Hurricane Katrina graphic organizer
Optional IN assignment--for those who want more practice. Read and annotate an article from teacher provided magazine using the method from class (Blue, circle topic; Green, box around topic sentence; Orange, zigzag underline transitional sentences; Red, underline supporting details; Purple, find and write the main idea. This is not required--some students just requested extra practice.
