Week of 10/29

We are starting a poetry unit that will last two week! This week we will focus on the technical side of poetry--poetic devices, reviewing some figurative language, and rhyme scheme. Next week we will jump into some different types of poetry.

Important things going on this week:

Wednesday students can dress in fall-themed attire or their halloween costumes if they bring in $1. This will go to benefit the drama team. On Friday there's another regular dress down day that can be purchased with $1 OR a canned good. We are starting to think about our Thanksgiving baskets we put together, so if you send a canned good, think about things that might be enjoyable for a Thanksgiving dinner.

Week of October 15

This was a short week, but it was packed full in the ELA classroom! We are working on figurative language, though we are nearing the end. This week we reviewed hyperbole and personification, and we added idioms and adages/proverbs to our interactive notebooks. Students showed they comprehended the information by working through task cards on their desk top whiteboards. They enjoy the chance to use whiteboards and to demonstrate their understanding, and it is an easy way for me to assess learning.

Next week we will work with synonyms and antonyms, alliteration, and onomatopoeia. That will finish up our unit on figurative language. We will plan to have a scrimmage next Thursday over all figurative language.

Thank you to so many of you for continuing to donate supplies to my classroom! I purchased a set of mini whiteboards and could definitely still use clean socks for erasers (or miniature erasers that are sold on Amazon fairly cheaply) as well as the finer point white board markers in black. We use these a lot, so the markers that came with the boards I purchased will run out of ink quickly!

I'm looking forward to Fall Fest tomorrow! I'll be manning the bounce houses if you want to stop by and say hello!

Week of October 8

This week we started figurative language, and we wrapped up the book Hidden Figures.

Today (Wednesday) was a Mock Day,  but we'll get back on track tomorrow with similes and metaphors. We started with these basic elements of figurative language on Tuesday, but student homework did not reflect understanding, so we will go back and work through multiple examples together as a class. We will continue with figurative language for the next few weeks until we get through it all.

The next novel we will read will be Tuck Everlasting, so please make sure you start getting that ordered for your student. We will not be starting it until late November, but I will not be pushing the start date back due to lack of books in class. This is the edition I will be using in class, but if you have another version already, we will make it work!

https://www.amazon.com/Tuck-Everlasting-Natalie-Babbit/dp/0312369816/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1539186145&sr=8-2&keywords=Tuck+Everlasting

ISBN: 978-0-312-36981-1

Like last time, I am willing to order the book for your child if you send in payment of $8.59 ($7.99 plus tax, on Amazon). There are cheaper ways to procure this book--used from Half Price books, for example.

A few weeks ago I posted a classroom needs blog post. I was so appreciative of the donations that quickly poured in. Thank you for supporting my classroom! I will continue to update that post as needs arise. For now, I mostly need laminating sheets because I make dozens and dozens of task cards to review what we learn in class, and they last forever if I laminate them. I have a laminator, but I run through the sheets like crazy, so I am always accepting donations in that area.

Some students have been lazy about completing and turning in homework this school year. I will be sending emails to parents about one particularly important (and large) homework assignment that many of your students failed to complete or complete fully. Please check your emails for that correspondence, and if I don't have your email or phone number, I will be sending a letter home with your student.

As always, get in touch if you have any questions!

Good morning! This week we are focusing on character conflict. There are four types of conflict:

Character vs. Self
Character vs. Nature

We have notes on this in our interactive notebooks and will be continuing that today.

Our scrimmage on Friday will be over Point of View and Character Conflict.

We will hopefully be finishing Hidden Figures up next week and having our final big group discussion!
